EDO PERIOD TO 1868

“Ukiyo-e (Floating World) woodblock prints began to be produced in the late 17th century, but in 1764 Harunobu produced the first polychrome print. Print designers of the next generation created elegant depictions of courtesans.” Toyokuni, Eizan and Eisen bridged the period over into the 1800s. In the 19th century Hokusai and Hiroshige were the masters of landscape artistry. Hokusai was the Leonardo DiVinci of this period, a great artist and a passionate student of the emerging science and technology of the day. Hiroshige was the creator of romantic landscape prints including that of the Tokaido Road. Kuniyoshi, Kunisada and others excelled in the field of samurai and geisha prints.
