MOUNTAIN HOLY MAN.

 This IVORY NETSUKE (toggle) is from the  1700s,  a "sennin" or a saint/hermit/sage who lives in the mountains. This netsuke depicts him as wearing a cloak of  leaves and carrying a lidded pot to collect herbs and teas.
   According to Daoism, "sennin" ("shan-ren" or "xian-ren" in Chinese) has acquired so much merit by his asceticism that he can perform miracles for those who carry his likeness.

    The netsuke is in mint condition, showing the deep patina of its age and the smooth polished surface from the generations of its owners.  Size 5 inches.

  "HOTEI ("Cloth Bag") - God of Contentment & Happiness, originated in Taoism/Buddhism of China. Patterned after a high priest of the 10th century Sung Dynasty. Feeds poor and needy and is patron saint of restauranteurs and bartenders,  Vintage folk art carved wooden Hotei, middle Edo Period Japanese, ca 1750s. Height 9", length 10".  Title: "Kegon no Gokyo" ("The Five Teachings of the School of Flowery Spendor".

The word "Kegon" means Avatamsaka Buddhism, a Mahayana School which came to Japan from China in 736.

This original printer's woodblock, hangi, is hand-carved from Japanese cherrywood.

This Chinese-language block printed 4 pages (2 red, 2 black on back) of a book which was published in Japan in Kyoto in the 4th year of Kanei era (1707).
