This IVORY NETSUKE (toggle) is from the  1700s,  a "sennin" or a saint/hermit/sage who lives in the mountains. This netsuke depicts him as wearing a cloak of  leaves and carrying a lidded pot to collect herbs and teas.
   According to Daoism, "sennin" ("shan-ren" or "xian-ren" in Chinese) has acquired so much merit by his asceticism that he can perform miracles for those who carry his likeness.

Title: "Kegon no Gokyo" ("The Five Teachings of the School of Flowery Spendor". The word "Kegon" means Avatamsaka Buddhism, a Mahayana School which came to Japan from China in 736. This original printer's woodblock, hangi, is hand-carved from Japanese cherrywood. This Chinese-language block printed 4 pages (2 red, 2 black on back) of a book which was published in Japan in Kyoto in the 4th year of Kanei era (1707).
